Key Stats of Indian General Elections
How Democracy Stays Secured
100% Sealed Trust
Every Indian Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) operates on standard one-time programmable microchips. They are never connected to the internet, Bluetooth, or any network, making them completely immune to cyber hacks.
Double Verification (VVPAT)
Introduced to guarantee total reliability. The Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail prints a physical ballot paper for visual verification. Even if an electronic tally is disputed, ECI physically counts random VVPAT paper rolls.
Independent Oversight
The Election Commission of India (ECI) acts as an autonomous constitutional authority under Article 324, free from executive control, ensuring fair and unbiased play for all candidates.

The Electoral Lifecycle Roadmap
Conducting the world's biggest election is a highly structured process running across distinct operational phases. Select any milestone below to see standard protocols, laws, and activities of that period.
Announcement & Model Code
The Election Commission of India calls a press conference to announce poll schedules across all States and Union Territories. The instant they announce, the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) immediately goes into active effect.
Key Regulatory Protocols:
- Model Code of Conduct (MCC): Government is restricted from announcing new policies, schemes, or financial grants to prevent influencing voters.
- Public Assets: Rulings parties cannot use official vehicles, machinery, or public spaces for campaigning.
- Security Mobilization: Immediate deployment planning for CAPF forces starts across sensitive zones.
Did You Know?
Once MCC starts, no official photo of ministers, including the PM, can remain displayed on government websites or advertisements!
Interactive Guide: How to Vote
Welcome to the polling booth booth simulator. Follow these real voting steps:
- Step 1: Check BU Status - Verify the green "READY" light on the Balloting Unit is glowing. This means the Presiding Officer has unlocked the ballot.
- Step 2: Cast Your Vote - Press the blue button next to your preferred candidate's name and symbol on the Balloting Unit.
- Step 3: Listen & Verify Slip -
- The red LED next to the candidate will light up.
- A paper slip will be printed in the VVPAT window showing your selected candidate.
- Verify the details on the paper slip. It remains visible for exactly 7 seconds.
- Step 4: The Final Beep - The printed VVPAT paper slip will automatically cut and drop into the sealed box below. A loud BEEP sound will play from the EVM Control Unit to confirm your vote is recorded securely.

Post-Poll EVM Sealing & Strongroom Security
How do we ensure that nobody tampers with the EVMs after votes are cast? It's done through a rigorous series of manual seals, paperwork, and heavy paramilitary guards.
1. Close & Seal
At 6:00 PM, the Presiding Officer presses the **CLOSE** button on the Control Unit (CU) in front of polling agents representing different political parties. The unit is locked inside its carrying case, wrapped with thread, and sealed with a hot wax stamp and unique paper seals signed by candidates' agents.
2. The Double-Lock Vault
All sealed EVMs are transported to designated Strongrooms in each constituency. The single door of the Strongroom is double-locked in the presence of returning officers and candidates. Double locks can only be opened when both keys are combined.
3. 3-Tier Paramilitary Shield
The outer perimeter is guarded by Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), the second layer by State Armed Police, and the third by local police. Candidate representatives can camp outside and watch 24/7 CCTV feeds of the Strongroom doors.

Counting Day Protocol
On counting day, multiple tables are set up in a large hall under heavy security and surveillance of candidates. To compute results:
- Step 1: Check Seals - The sealed carrying case of the Control Unit is checked, signed seals are verified by political agents to ensure no tampering has occurred.
- Step 2: Break Seal - The outer plastic seal is broken to reveal the result compartment door (Click **Break Paper Seal**).
- Step 3: Press "Result" Button - The supervisor presses the black "Result" button inside the compartment. The display screen will cycle through: Total Voters, Candidate 1 Votes, Candidate 2 Votes... and output the final tally.

Random VVPAT Audit Match Minigame
To establish absolute trust, ECI mandates physical cross-verification. At the end of voting, **5 polling stations are randomly selected by draw of lots** in each Assembly constituency. Their VVPAT physical paper slips are manually counted and matched with the respective EVM Control Unit display totals.
Booths Under Inspection
We have randomly selected a booth for cross-verification. Let's compare the Electronic CU Record with physical paper slips in the VVPAT container.

Report MCC Violation
Spotted illegal campaigning, cash distribution, or hate speech? File it anonymously. ECI will deploy flying squads and resolve this within **100 Minutes**.
What is the cVIGIL App?
cVIGIL (vigilant citizen) is ECI’s flagship mobile app designed to bypass local political pressures and establish direct contact between citizens and District Election Officers.
Core Strengths:
- Fast Action: The system automatically coordinates with nearby physical Flying Squads via GIS location data.
- Geotagged Integrity: Pre-recorded files or gallery uploads are not allowed in the actual app to avoid fake or staged reports. Only live camera captures are processed.
- Total Anonymity: Citizens can report violations without revealing their credentials, protecting their safety.
ECI KYC Database Portal (Interactive Mock)
Under Supreme Court mandates, every candidate must submit a legally-binding affidavit detailing their financial assets, liabilities, educational background, and pending criminal cases. Use ECI's KYC engine below to explore candidate profiles.
Home Voting: Accessible Democracy
To ensure no citizen is left behind, ECI introduced home-voting via postal ballots for senior citizens aged **85 years and above** and **Persons with Disabilities (PwD)** with 40%+ benchmark disability.
Form 12D Application
Eligible voters submit Form 12D to the Booth Level Officer (BLO) within 5 days of election notification, requesting the postal ballot option.
Official Polling Visit
A team of two polling officials, accompanied by a micro-observer, videographer, and security personnel, visits the voter's residence with a secure ballot paper.
Secrecy Compartment
A temporary voting compartment is set up at their house. The voter marks the ballot paper in complete privacy, puts it inside an envelope, and seals it.
Secure Deposition
The sealed envelope is dropped into a portable steel ballot box. Candidates' agents are invited to witness this entire process, which is fully videographed to avoid coercion.
Home Voting Integrity Check
Critics ask: Could family members force the senior to vote for a specific candidate?
"No. The polling team enforces the exact same secrecy protocols at home as at a polling booth. The family members must stay outside the voting compartment, and any interference results in cancellation of the ballot."
